Prayers Of The Spirit: Principles Of Divine Impartation

Study The Word

Romans 1:11-12 (KJV)
“For I long to see you, that I may impart unto you some spiritual gift, to the end ye may be established; That is, that I may be comforted together with you by the mutual faith both of you and of me.”

The Word of God unveils to us one of the most profound spiritual principles of God—the principle of impartation.  The Apostle Paul says, I have a burning desire placed in my heart by God Himself to go and deposit something supernatural into you that are in Rome. He says, “that I may impart unto you some spiritual gift.” He didn’t say he wanted to come and just preach to them and just encourage them with nice words. He said he wanted to impart! To deposit! To give over something spiritual into them!

μεταδίδωμι metadidōmi impart – to give over, to deposit, to share, to give, to transfer

“Metadidomi” means to give over, to deposit, to share, or to give. Think about this: when you deposit money into a bank account, that money is transferred from your possession into the account. It becomes part of that account’s balance. It’s no longer just with you; it’s now in that account, ready to be used, ready to work, ready to produce! That’s exactly what spiritual impartation does! The Holy Spirit wants to deposit, to give over abilities, to transfer the workings and expressions of spiritual abilities to be permanently operative in your life! These aren’t just nice feelings or emotional experiences—these are actual spiritual capacities that become your normal daily operations of your spiritual makeup! So this impartation is to ensure that the expression of the abilities of the Holy Spirit can permanently reside within you.

Paul says the purpose of this impartation is that “to the end ye may be established.” You see, God doesn’t want you to be a weak, unstable Christian, tossed to and fro by every wind of doctrine, shaken by every challenge that comes your way. He wants us established! He wants us grounded! He wants us solid and unmovable! And how does that happen? Through the impartation of pneumatikos charisma, the operations of spiritual abilities and graces, or what the English translations call “spiritual gifts”! Pneumatikos charisma’s are spiritual grace-abilities, or supernatural grace-abilities. These pneumatikos charisma’s that the Holy Spirit deposits into your life are the very things that establish you, that make you strong, that make you effective in the Kingdom of God!

This impartation is God’s will for your life! It’s not optional. It’s not just for “super Christians” or those who have been in the faith for decades. No! God wants every one of His children to receive impartations of pneumatikos charisma’s. How do I know this? Because Paul, writing by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, expressed this longing, and it was from the Holy Spirit working through Paul! The Holy Spirit Himself is the one that has this desire to impart, to deposit, to give over supernatural grace-abilities to you!

πνευματικός pneumatikos spiritual – supernatural, non-carnal, pertaining to the spirit, divinely bestowed

Now the word “spiritual” here is “pneumatikos” in the Greek, and means supernatural or non-carnal, spiritual. These gifts – abilities that God wants to impart to you are not natural abilities. You can’t learn them in a university. You can’t acquire them through human effort or training. They are supernatural! They are from the Spirit of God! They are pneumatikos—pertaining to the Spirit, divinely bestowed upon you by the Holy Spirit Himself!

Think about this, God is not trying to make you a better natural person. He wants to activate His supernatural abilities into your life! Abilities that operate in a dimension beyond the natural! Abilities that function by the power of the Holy Spirit!

Now, notice what Paul says next. He says, “That is, that I may be comforted together with you by the mutual faith both of you and of me.” You see, when you receive impartation, when you begin to operate in these divine abilities, it doesn’t just benefit you—it benefits the entire body of Christ! There’s a mutual strengthening that happens. There’s a mutual comfort. There’s a mutual edification. Your faith strengthens others, and their faith strengthens you! This is the beauty of the body of Christ functioning as God intended!

But here’s what I want you to understand today: you must position yourself to receive this kind of divine impartation. The believers at Rome couldn’t receive what Paul wanted to deposit if they weren’t willing to receive it. They had to be open. They had to be expectant. They had to position their hearts to receive what the Spirit of God wanted to give them through Paul. Now, your heart posture has to be the same if this is going to work.

χάρισμα charisma gift – divine gratuity, ability of grace, spiritual endowment, gracious bestowment

The word for “gift” here in this verse is “charisma,” which means a divine gratuity or an ability of grace. It’s something freely given, not earned. You don’t deserve it. You can’t work for it. You can’t buy it. It’s a gracious bestowment from God! But you must position yourself to receive it! You must have a heart that is open and expectant. You must have faith to receive what God wants to deposit into your life!

So how do you position yourself? Through prayer; prayers of the Spirit! Through the study of the Word!  Through worship! As you engage in these spiritual disciplines, your heart opens up. Your spirit becomes receptive. You become positioned to receive fresh impartations from the Holy Spirit!

The Easy English version of this passage puts it beautifully: “I want very much to visit you so that I can give some gift from God’s Spirit to you. That will help you to believe Christ more strongly.” You see, the purpose of these spiritual abilities is to help you believe Christ more strongly! To establish you! To strengthen you! To make you more effective in your walk with God and in your service in His Kingdom!

So we have now established and understood that this is God’s will for your life! He wants to receive impartations of divine abilities from the Spirit of God! He wants to deposit and activate them in you, and have them permanently active! And these supernatural abilities, spiritual capacities will establish you and make you effective in these last days! Make up your mind that you will never miss out on everything God has for you. So position your heart today. Open yourself up to receive and be expectant! And as you pray this prayer of the Spirit for impartation, receive in faith and step out boldly exercising the spiritual abilities that you have received through this prayer of the Spirit.

Pray The Word

Heavenly Father, I thank You that it is Your will for me to receive deposits of spiritual abilities from Your Holy Spirit. I position my heart today to receive. I am expectant for fresh impartations, for new deposits of spiritual abilities that will establish me and make me effective in Your Kingdom in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Speak The Word

I am positioned to receive impartations of spiritual gifts from the Holy Spirit! My heart is open, my spirit is receptive, and I receive fresh deposits of supernatural abilities today! As I study the Word, as I pray, as I worship, spiritual gifts are being imparted to me, establishing me and strengthening me in my walk with God. I am established by the pneumatikos charisma, the supernatural abilities of the Spirit that have been deposited into my life, in the name of Jesus!
