Faith Leadership: Excellence

Excellence is one of the most misunderstood words in our culture.

We tend to hear it as pressure to be the best, outperform everyone, never make a mistake. But the kind of excellence God invites us into is something else entirely. It’s not about being flawless. It’s about being faithful.

Consider Daniel. Scripture says he was set apart “because an excellent spirit was in him” (Daniel 6:3). Not an excellent résumé. Not unmatched talent. An excellent spirit. His character, his consistency, his integrity in the unseen places, that’s what made him stand out.

That’s a relief, isn’t it?

Because most of us aren’t called to do extraordinary things. We’re called to do ordinary things with an extraordinary heart. To show up faithfully. To follow through when no one would notice if we didn’t. To bring our whole self to the work in front of us, knowing who we’re really working for.

“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men” (Colossians 3:23).

The pursuit of excellence isn’t striving to earn God’s approval, you already have that in Christ. It’s a response of gratitude. We give our best because He gave His best for us. We pour ourselves into the task, the relationship, the calling, because everything we do becomes an offering when it’s offered to Him.

So today, don’t confuse excellence with exhaustion. Don’t mistake it for perfectionism. Simply ask: How can I honor God in what’s already in front of me?

Then give it your whole heart to it.
