The Purpose & Power of Writing: The Power of the Heavenly Ledger
Study The Word
Revelation 20:12
“And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.”
This is a profound and sobering picture of judgment. John sees the dead standing before God, and then he sees two sets of books being opened. There are “the books,” and there is “the book of life”. What does this tell us? It tells us that what is written is of paramount importance to God. The word for “books” here is biblion, meaning “a book, or the book, or a scroll,” and here in it speaks of a written record.
Can you imagine? There is a written record of every human being, every word, every thought, and every action. All of it is written down and preserved in heaven. This is not some abstract, vague idea; it is a tangible, written reality. God keeps perfect records, and everything is meticulously written down. He is the God of documentation! He doesn’t just remember; He writes it.
βιβλίον bibliona bible – a book, a scroll
This is why your salvation is so secure. Your name is not just mentally remembered by God; it is written down in a book, the “book of life”. When you accepted Jesus Christ, your name was permanently recorded in the Lamb’s Book of Life. The same way the books are opened to judge the dead, that same principle guarantees that your name is written down for all eternity. It is sealed in a divine, permanent record. Revelation 21:27 “And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb’s book of life.”
Here we see another profound truth: the purpose of the Book of Life is to establish who has access to the New Jerusalem. Those whose names are written in the book have guaranteed access. What an incredible blessing! You are trusting in a divine, written decree. Your access to the new heaven and new earth is secured because your name is written in the Lamb’s Book of Life. Eternal destinies are dependent on what is written, that’s extremely profound, regarding the purpose and power of writing. This further solidifies then eternal relevance and importance of writing.
This should give you an unshakeable confidence in your salvation. It should anchor you in the knowledge that your destiny is not random or uncertain; it is secured and recorded in heaven. The permanence of God’s writing is a testimony to the permanence of your salvation. It’s a reminder that your name is so important to God that He wrote it down.
What do you have to worry about? Sickness, death, or any other earthly challenge has no power over you because your destiny is no longer on this earth. Your name is written in heaven, in the greatest book of all, and it cannot be erased. Hallelujah!
Pray The Word
Heavenly Father, I thank You for Your profound wisdom in keeping a written record, and for the incredible truth that my name is written in the Lamb’s Book of Life. I thank You for the security of my salvation, which is not based on my feelings but on the permanent, unchangeable truth that You have sealed me with the Spirit and recorded my name in heaven. I praise You for Your mercy and grace in Jesus’ name, amen.
Speak The Word
My name is written in the Lamb’s Book of Life! I am a citizen of the New Jerusalem, and my access is guaranteed and secured by what is written in heaven. What’s written is eternal, so my destiny is eternally sealed with Christ. My life is not bound by the books of this world, but by the book in heaven! Glory to God!
