Become the Leader That Christ Destined You to Become

John 14:12 (NIV)
“Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.”
Let me remind you of something that should shape how you carry yourself in every place of influence you have been given: Christ is the greatest leader who has ever walked the earth. And He has also set the standard and the example for leadership in His Word. When we explore the Scriptures and analyse the things He said concerning leadership, we do not have to look very far to see those words in action.
So let us explore one scripture of leadership by Christ, so that we remain encouraged to always give our best in this role, exactly as He has demonstrated to us. Look at what He tells His disciples in John’s Gospel. “Whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these.”
How beautiful is it to see that the Lord Jesus Christ was so secure in His leadership? He knew exactly who He was. And notice, He goes even further. He lets the disciples know that not only will they do the same works He has done, they will also do greater things in the future. He empowers them. He gives them the licence to shine. Sit with that word “greater”:
μείζων meizōn greater – larger, more, greater in degree and measure; the very increase a true leader longs to see rise up in those who come after them.
Can you imagine a leader so secure that He actively calls His followers to surpass Him? That is the heart of Christlike leadership. So in your own role as a leader, understand this clearly: your responsibility is never to break down the confidence and the esteem of those who follow and serve under you. Your responsibility is the opposite. It is to empower them, to lift them, and to grow them. A sign of a truly successful leader is one who has been able to replicate themselves in those who follow and serve under them.
And there is a secret hidden in here. The student who surpasses their master is great, but the master will always be the greatest and the best, because they were first, and because they were willing to impart. Do you see it? Nothing is lost by raising someone higher than yourself. The one who gave the increase remains the source of it.
As I look over my own life and see all the great leaders who were willing to invest in me, my heart today is filled with gratitude toward them. And as great as I may become, I know it would never have been possible without those gifted leaders giving me an opportunity and a chance. So there really is a message here for both sides: for the leader and the learner, for the mentor and the mentee. It comes from how the Lord Jesus Christ was the best leader, and it shows us how we ought to position ourselves.
So here is where it leaves me, and where I pray it leaves you too. I am encouraged to show up as my best in every sphere of my life: the office, the home, the place of purpose. His excellence and His leadership example become my invitation, not my pressure. And when I remember what He poured out for me, and the standard He set, giving my least simply is not on the table anymore. Hallelujah!
Pray The Word
Heavenly Father, thank You that Christ is the greatest leader who ever lived, and that in Him I have both the standard and the strength to lead well. Thank You that You empower Your children to do even greater things, and that true leadership lifts people rather than diminishes them. Where I lead, in my home, my work, and my place of purpose, teach me to build confidence in others, to impart everything I have, and to rejoice when they surpass me. Let His excellence be my invitation and never my pressure, and help me to become the leader You destined me to become, in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
Speak The Word
Christ is my example, and I am becoming the leader He destined me to become. I do not break people down; I empower them, I lift them, and I grow them, until they can do even greater things. I gladly impart everything I have, and I rejoice when those who follow me rise higher than I did. I show up as my best in every sphere God has placed me, because His excellence is my invitation and not my pressure. When I remember what He poured out for me and the standard He set, giving my least is simply not on the table anymore, in the name of Jesus Christ!
