Don’t Lose Heart in the Small Beginning Study The Word
Matthew 13:31-32 (KJV)
“The kingdom of heaven is like to a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and sowed in his field: Which indeed is the least of all seeds: but when it is grown, it is the greatest among herbs, and becometh a tree, so that the birds of the air come and lodge in the branches thereof.”
Let me say something out loud that I think many of us feel but rarely admit: people do not like the mustard seed process. Listen, we love the tree. We love the harvest, the platform, the finished and impressive thing. But the small, slow, unglamorous beginning? That part we would happily skip. And yet, as Jesus shows us right here, that is precisely the Kingdom’s process.
Look at how the Lord describes it. The kingdom of heaven begins like a mustard seed: the very least of all seeds, almost nothing in your hand. It looks insignificant. It feels insignificant. And still, it is destined to become the greatest among the herbs, a tree large enough for the birds of the air to come and rest in its branches. Can you imagine? The enormous future was always hidden inside the tiny, ordinary beginning. But it had to grow. It had to go through the process.
And here is the part we so easily miss: there is a deliberate process to purpose. God is not careless, and He is not slow. He is intentional. The smallness of your beginning is not a sign that He has forgotten you; it is the very soil in which He is forming you. You know, an excellent spirit, a strong character, a faithful heart: these things are not something that simply shows up on the big day, when the lights and the camera and the moment of promotion arrive. They are cultivated quietly, every single day, in the mundane tasks, in the things that do not look glamorous at all. When you do the small thing excellently, again and again, there is an accumulation taking place. It is growing in you, day by day, whether you can see it or not.
So this process asks something of us. It calls for daily effort. It asks us to grow in faithfulness, the kind that shows up in the small tasks no one is applauding. It asks for discipline, to stay the course when the excitement has long worn off. It asks for consistency, the quiet repetition that builds real things. And it asks for humility, the willingness to keep learning and to be led, rather than insisting we already have it all figured out. Do you understand? These are not delays to your purpose. They are the very lessons your purpose is built on.
So embrace the journey, and embrace the lessons that come with it, even the uncomfortable ones. Because here is the promise you can stand on: that big vision God placed in your heart will certainly come to pass. It is not in question. But it will be built the way the Kingdom always builds: step by step, season by season, through the process.
And when the smallness tempts you to despise where you are, remember the Lord’s heart toward beginnings. Through the prophet He asked, “who hath despised the day of small things?” (Zechariah 4:10). God does not despise your small day. He delights in it, because He can already see the tree folded up inside the seed.
This is why the Word pleads with us not to give up. “And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not” (Galatians 6:9). I want you to notice those three words: in due season.
καιρός kairos due season – the appointed time, the right and opportune moment.
The Greek there is so rich: Do you see it? Your harvest is not tied to your impatience, or to anyone else’s timeline. It is tied to God’s kairos, His appointed, opportune season. Your only assignment in the meantime is the second half of that verse: do not faint. Do not grow weary in the well doing. Keep watering the small thing. Keep showing up faithfully. Keep letting yourself be led.
So do not lose heart, friend. The seed in your hand may look like nothing today. But it is a Kingdom seed, planted by a faithful God, and in due season, His season, you will most certainly reap. Hallelujah.
Pray The Word
Heavenly Father, thank You that You are not careless with my beginnings, but that You have a deliberate and loving process for my purpose. Help me to be faithful in the small tasks, disciplined to stay the course, consistent in my effort, and humble enough to keep learning and being led. I will not despise the day of small things, and I will not grow weary in well doing. I trust You for the harvest in Your appointed season, in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
Speak The Word
I embrace the Kingdom’s process, and I do not despise my small beginnings. I am faithful in the little things, disciplined for the long course, and humble enough to be led. I will not grow weary in well doing, because I know my harvest is coming in its due season. The vision God placed in me will surely come to pass, built step by step by a faithful God. I do not lose heart; I keep going, in the name of Jesus Christ!
