Character Over Output: How God Evaluates a Leader

1 Samuel 16:7 (NIV)
“But the Lord said to Samuel, ‘Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.'”
Let me talk to you about something that will protect the health of any team, any home, or any organisation you are called to lead. Sometimes, as leaders, we fall into the trap of focusing only on someone’s output, their fame, or their results. But if we are after long-term success and true team longevity, alignment of values is everything. And that usually has far less to do with what a person produces, and far more to do with their heart and their character.
Look at how God Himself evaluates a person. In our scripture, He is teaching Samuel the very thing so many leaders miss: “The Lord does not look at the things people look at.” People tend to focus on the outward things. The gift. The charisma. The appearance. The results. The polished image someone has managed to create. But as leaders, if we truly want to build sustainable results, great teams, and a place of purpose-driven work that also carries great profit, we have to learn to take the holistic approach that the Lord takes. Sit with the word for what God actually examines:
לֵבָב lebab heart – the inner person; the hidden seat of the mind, the will, the character, and the true motives that noלֵבָב outward result can reveal.
Do you understand what that means for how you lead? God looks past the surface and reads the lebab, the real person underneath the performance. So here is a question worth sitting with. If someone delivers great results but creates division within the team, what was the real cost? True success is never just about the what. It is also about the how.
Now let me be honest, taking the holistic approach like the Lord often looks more like a long-term strategy than one that produces quick results. You might find that you need to exercise patience, training up someone whose values align with your organisation’s, even when their output is still small, rather than exalting someone else simply for the mere fact of their output. It is the slower road, but it is the one that lasts.
Because here is the truth every leader eventually learns: for any system to be truly successful, there are simply non-negotiables, and values is one of them. You cannot build something that endures on results alone.
The Lord knows this. So as His children, sent out into all the world to establish His Kingdom in business, in government spaces, in our workplaces, and in our families, let us learn to look beyond the surface. Let us ask God for the wisdom to see what He sees, and to make the right decisions concerning the people we lead. Hallelujah!
Pray The Word
Heavenly Father, thank You that You do not look at the things people look at, but that You look at the heart. Forgive me for the times I have measured people, or myself, by output and image alone, and teach me to value character and aligned values the way You do. Give me Your wisdom to see past the surface, the patience to build people whose hearts are right, and the courage to hold values as a non-negotiable. Help me to lead every sphere You have given me the way You lead, in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

I lead the way my God leads, looking beyond the surface to the heart. I refuse to measure people by output and image alone; I honour character, integrity, and aligned values. I have the patience to build people the right way, even when the results are slow to come. Values are a non-negotiable for me, because I am building something that lasts. I ask God for wisdom, and I make my decisions the way He would, in the name of Jesus Christ!
