We Can Change the Qualities We Don’t Like in Ourselves

Study The Word

2 Corinthians 3:18 (KJV)
“But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.”

Let me share something that I believe will lift a great weight off you: salvation is not the end. It is only the beginning of a journey, a journey where we become more and more Christlike.

Think about it like this. We are like actors who receive a script from our director, and we step into that new character. But here is the difference. God is the director. The script is His Word. And as we study that script, the more we become like the character the Lord Jesus died to make us: a new creation. And do you know what the awesome thing is? We never have to get out of character. As we study God’s Word, accept it, and become what it says we are, we are forever changed.

That is exactly what our scripture promises. We are “changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.” Sit with that word “changed” for a moment:

μεταμορφόω metamorphoō changed – to be transformed and transfigured, completely changed in form from the inside out; the very word that gives us metamorphosis.

Can you imagine? It is the language of the caterpillar becoming the butterfly. This is not a light cosmetic fix. It is a total transformation of form, worked in you as you behold the glory of the Lord. That is what God is doing in you, from glory to glory.

Now let me show you how this actually works on the inside, because so many people miss it. Many people get born again. They receive the Lord Jesus Christ, and immediately, in that very moment, they become a new creation. But what many do not grasp is what actually happened in that moment. Your spirit got born again, because man is a spirit. God the Father is the One responsible for implanting the new, recreated spirit into you, because He is the Father of spirits. So at this point your spirit is fully born again.

But here is what you must understand. Outside of your spirit, you still have your soul, and your soul houses your mind, your will, and your emotions. And the responsibility for renewing that space is up to you. Now do not hear that and feel alone, because you were never left alone. The Holy Spirit and the Word of God were given to help you. As you study God’s Word about the new you, the Holy Spirit is right there to strengthen you, to support you, to help you renew your mind and make the necessary adjustments.

That is why I say it with such confidence: anything we do not like in our character can be changed. We might feel as though we were simply “born this way.” But if it is a bad habit, or an unhelpful character trait, then the very moment we are made aware of it, that awareness is not condemnation. It is an opportunity for change. You are not stuck in your ways.

I am not telling you it will be easy. But I am telling you it can be done. And we are living in a moment in history where so many options for this kind of healing, development, and growth are available to us. So why would we remain where we are?

So refuse to stay stuck in ways and habits that hold you back from the person Christ died to make you. Maybe it is a fear of operating in your giftings and your talents. Maybe it is laziness. Maybe you are a boss, and you find yourself never wanting to pay your staff. Maybe you tend to see the negatives in people instead of the good God has placed in them. Whatever it is, if you can see it, and you desire to change it, then go for it. Because God has given us every material we need to succeed. He has given us all things that pertain unto life and godliness. Hallelujah!

Pray The Word

Heavenly Father, thank You that salvation was only the beginning, and that You are changing me from glory to glory into the image of Your Son. Thank You that my spirit is already born again, and that You have given me Your Spirit and Your Word to renew my mind and my soul. Where there are habits and traits in me that hold me back, I thank You that awareness of them is an invitation to change, not a sentence to stay the same. Help me to do the work, to study the new me in Your Word, and to keep beholding Your glory until I am transformed, in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Speak The Word

I am a new creation, and I am being changed from glory to glory into the image of the Lord. My spirit is born again, and it is my joy and my responsibility to renew my mind by the Word and the Spirit. I am not stuck in my ways; the moment I see a habit or a trait that holds me back, I have the power to change it. I refuse fear, laziness, and every quality that limits who Christ died to make me. God has given me all things that pertain unto life and godliness, so I go for it, in the name of Jesus Christ!
