The Purpose & Power Of Writing: The Written Word To The Seven Churches

Study The Word
Revelation 2:1 & 8 & 12 & 18
Unto the angel of the church of Ephesus write… 8 And unto the angel of the church in Smyrna write… 12 And to the angel of the church in Pergamos write… 18 And unto the angel of the church in Thyatira write…”

The power of writing was used by the Lord Jesus to not only bring spiritual realities of the things He wanted to establish into the physical world and the earth part of His church; He also used it to establish a concrete record and communication for the people of God that was not only relevant and applicable to the body of Christ back then, but is also relevant and applicable to the body of Christ throughout all the hundreds of years up to now and also into the future. This just further proves to us how powerful this principle truly is.  After Jesus commands John to write the things he has seen and which he shall see in chapter 1, the Lord Jesus Himself immediately begins to put this principle into practice by sending His written Word to each of the seven churches in Asia.

Now, listen to this: Jesus did not just give a general message for John to go and preach. No! He gave seven distinct writings of letters, each one specifically addressed to a particular church. To the church in Ephesus, He said, “write this!” To the church in Smyrna, He said, “write this!” To Pergamos, “write this!” and to Thyatira, “write this!”. Every letter was meticulously crafted with specific commendations, specific rebukes, and specific instructions for each church.

This is the Master of the universe, our Lord Jesus Christ Himself, using writing as the primary mode of communication for His final instructions to the churches. This tells us that God places an incredible value and premium on the written word! A spoken word can be misremembered, forgotten, or distorted. But the written Word? It is a permanent record. It is established in the earth as it is established in heaven, and can now be read again and again, and passed down from generation to generation for an everlasting witness. It can be referred back to. It is the solid, undeniable truth that stands the test of time. This is how God has worked with His ministers throughout all the generations; and this is how He works with His ministers even today.

Like I mentioned before, if ever you want to be used as a minister by God in a unique way to impact your generation, you need to cultivate the discipline in putting to work the principle of writing.  God wouldn’t disclose to me or to anyone for that matter any serious revelation if He knew that I wouldn’t write it down. But because over the years I got to understand the spirituality of writing and how God works with writing, and how spirits work with writing I started to document and put everything the Spirit of God shared with me in written form.  And from that time to now the flow of divine information flows in and through my spirit like torrents, consistently, unending streams of revelation. And one of the reasons we put this series together is to inspire God’s children to start doing the same.  This is why the God insisted throughout the generations men to write the Word of God, so that you and I could have an immutable record of God’s heart and will for us. And we also see the Lord Jesus also consistently insisting on writing because He wanted His message to be precise, unchangeable, and eternally available to us His people.

Pray The Word
Heavenly Father, I thank You for the written Word of God. I thank You that You have given me a permanent record of Your love and Your instructions for my life in the Bible. I pray that I will never treat Your written Word lightly but will always handle it with the reverence it deserves, for it is my sure foundation and my guide, in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Speak The Word
The written Word of God is my life! It is my sure foundation and the unchangeable record of God’s will for me. I am a doer of the written Word! I live by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God, and I apply it to my life with diligence and faith!
