“His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.”
Let me tell you something I have come to treasure: there is a deep, faith-filled satisfaction in finishing, and in finishing well. Few things in this life feel as good as keeping a promise you made to yourself. And it does something in you that goes far beyond the task itself.
Here is what I mean. When you actually finish what you started, when you bring something to completion, you become a witness to yourself of the very Word of God you say you believe. Think about that. Before anyone else can ever demonstrate faith on your behalf, you exercise faith by seeing a thing through to the end. You minister faith to yourself, for yourself. And in the finishing, you also begin to emulate the character of God Himself, because throughout the Scriptures, our God is known as a Finisher, the One who brings things to completion. He is the One of whom Paul says He “which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ.” When you finish, you are looking a little more like your Father.
But let me be honest about where the struggle sets in, because I think you know it as well as I do. Finishing gets hard when the road gets challenging. The excitement fades. The early motivation quietly slips away. Setbacks show up and introduce detours and delays you never planned for, and somewhere in the middle of it all you just feel exhausted by the whole process. That is the place where so many good things get abandoned, not at the start, but in the tiring middle.
And yet, when you push through and finish, you walk away with so much more than the result. You build something priceless on the inside: self-trust. Do you understand what I mean by that? You start to believe your own words, because you have proven to yourself that you fulfil them, just like the Lord fulfils His. And that matters more than we realise, because before you can ever lead another person, you have to be able to lead yourself. Self-trust is the quiet foundation underneath every real kind of leadership: of yourself first, then your home or your business, then your team. It all begins with being someone you can rely on.
So how is that kind of trustworthiness actually built? Look at the word the Lord uses for the servant He commends:
πιστός pistos faithful – trustworthy, reliable, one who can be depended upon.
Can you imagine hearing that spoken over your life? “Well done, thou good and *faithful* servant.” Faithful means trustworthy. Notice the master does not commend brilliance, or talent, or the size of the results. He commends faithfulness. And faithfulness, that dependable follow-through, is not a personality you are simply born with. It is a muscle you build: one rep, one day, one small choice at a time. Every time you finish the thing you said you would do, that muscle grows a little stronger, and you become a little more trustworthy, first of all to yourself.
And hear the reward the Lord attaches to it: “thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things. He entrusts *more* to the one who was faithful with what was already in their hands. Finishing the small, unseen, unglamorous thing in front of you is how you become the kind of person God can trust with much.
So let me encourage you today, especially if you are in that exhausting middle stretch where the motivation has gone quiet: do not abandon it now. “He that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved” (Matthew 24:13). Endure. Keep your promise to yourself. Take the next single rep. Because on the other side of finishing is not just a completed task; it is a stronger, more trustworthy you, and the “well done” of a Father who finishes what He starts. Hallelujah! Finish, and finish well.
Pray The Word
Heavenly Father, thank You that You are a Finisher, and that the same faithfulness lives in me by Your Spirit. Strengthen me in the tiring middle, where the excitement has faded and the setbacks have come, and help me to endure to the end. Teach me to keep my promises to myself, one choice at a time, so that I become trustworthy, first before You, and then before others. I want to hear You say, “well done, good and faithful servant,” in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
Speak The Word
I am a finisher, because my God is a Finisher and His nature is in me. I do not abandon what I start; I endure to the end and bring it to completion. Every time I keep my word to myself, I grow stronger and more trustworthy. I lead myself well, and that is the foundation of every place God calls me to lead. I am good and faithful, and I will hear my Father say, “well done,” in the name of Jesus Christ!
