He Doesn’t Waste Anything

Study The Word

Romans 8:28 (KJV)
“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.”

Let me tell you something it took me years to truly believe: God does not waste anything. Not the good. And here is the part that healed me: not even the terrible.

For a long time I carried a quiet shame about where I came from. I grew up under some very hard conditions, with more than a few traumatic moments woven into my story. And like so many of us who have walked through painful beginnings, I did not want to be the odd one out, the one from the dysfunctional, difficult background. So I learned to run. I learned to paint myself in brighter colours, to present a tidier, more “normal” version of my life, and to keep the broken parts safely out of sight. I really did think that hiding my story was the same thing as healing from it. Do you understand? I was managing the wound instead of bringing it to the One who heals.

And here is what I did not yet understand: God was never ashamed of the very things I was so desperate to cover. While I was busy hiding my hardest seasons, He was looking at them as raw material for His glory.

That is the staggering promise tucked inside this verse. All things, not some things, not only the pretty things, work together for good to those who love God.

συνεργέω synergeō work together – to cooperate, to labour alongside toward one shared outcome.

Can you imagine the picture? The painful chapter and the beautiful one, the pit and the promise, the wound and the healing: God weaves them all together, like many hands working on a single garment, until they cooperate for your good. Now hear me carefully, because this matters. He is not saying every individual thing that happened to you was good. Some of it was genuinely terrible, and we never have to pretend otherwise. He is promising something far more wonderful: that nothing is left out of the weaving. Even the worst of it is being made to serve a purpose in His hands.

Think of Joseph. Before there was a palace, there was a pit his own brothers threw him into. Before the signet ring, there was a prison cell he did not deserve. From the outside, his whole life looked like one long catalogue of injustice and pain. And yet, standing on the other side of it all, he could look at the very brothers who betrayed him and say, “ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good” (Genesis 50:20). Listen: the pit did not disqualify him from the palace. The pit was part of the path to it. God used the dysfunction, the betrayal, the long delay, and He wasted none of it.

I see this all through the Scriptures, in life after life. So many of the people God lifted up and put on display came from circumstances they would never have chosen. Their stories were not clean. And that is exactly the point. Those hard moments and painful seasons were never meant to be sources of shame to be buried; they were the training grounds where God was quietly forming character, and the very stages on which He intended to show off His glory for everyone to see.

So here is what I would tell my younger, hiding and hurting self, and what I want to tell you right now: that experience that felt so terrible is not wasted. In God’s hands it can become the very thing that trains you, the testimony that encourages someone who is sitting exactly where you once sat, and a place where His glory is put on beautiful display. You do not have to keep running from your story. You do not have to keep painting over it. You can bring it, all of it, to your faithful Father, and let Him redeem it.

And friend, there is such freedom on the other side of that surrender. The day I stopped being ashamed of my beginnings was the day I let God begin to use them. Hallelujah! He is so much better at redeeming our pain than we ever were at hiding it. All things, every last one of them, are working together for your good.

Pray The Word

Heavenly Father, thank You that You waste nothing, not even the most painful chapters of my story. I bring You the seasons I have been ashamed of and the wounds I have tried to hide, and I trust You to weave them together for my good and Your glory. Thank You that, just as You did for Joseph, You can turn my pit into a place of purpose. I release the shame, and I receive Your redemption over every part of my journey, in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Speak The Word

I am one for whom all things, even the hard things, are working together for good. I am not ashamed of my story, because my God wastes nothing and redeems everything. My past is not my disqualification; it is the training ground where His glory is revealed. What was meant for evil, God is turning to good in my life. I walk free from shame, carrying a testimony that brings hope to others and glory to God, in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth!
