Genesis 1:1-3 (KJV)
“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.”
Let me clear up a lie that has kept so many God-given dreams sitting on a shelf, never begun. Somewhere we have deceived ourselves into thinking that starting something has to look glamorous: that it has to feel exciting, polished, and impressive from day one. And the reality? It almost never does.
Think about the start of any construction project. Before the beautiful building ever rises, there is rubble to clear away. There is land to level. There are deep foundations to dig and lay in the ground where no one will ever see them. And even then, as the work goes on, faults are discovered. Plans get redrawn. Strategies change. At that stage it looks nothing at all like what it is going to become. But here is the thing: the work has begun. And that, all on its own, is enough.
Now watch where God Himself starts, because it will free you. Look at the very first verses of the Bible. Before there was a single beautiful thing, “the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep.” It was chaos. It was empty. It was dark. And what did the Spirit of God do? He did not wait for the chaos to sort itself out first. He did not wait for better conditions. The Spirit of God moved over the mess. Sit with that word for a moment:
רָחַף rachaph moved – to hover, to brood, to flutter gently, the way a bird broods over its nest
Can you imagine? The Spirit of God brooded tenderly over the formless dark, the way a mother bird hovers over her young, and then God simply spoke: “Let there be light.” He began building right in the middle of the darkness. He did not need everything to be perfect before He started. He started, and the light came.
And I want you to hold onto this: that same God, the One who broods over chaos and speaks light into the dark, is with you in your messy beginning right now. Your start does not have to be tidy for Him to be in it. In fact, He rejoices over the very start. Hear the prophet: “do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin” (Zechariah 4:10). Do you understand what that means? God is not standing at the finish line with His arms crossed, waiting for you to make it look impressive before He is pleased. He is delighting at the beginning. He rejoices simply to see the work begin.
So please, do not let what your beginning looks like right now talk you out of beginning at all. Do not let the rubble and the unlevel ground and the discovered faults convince you that you are not ready, or not able, or that it will never amount to anything. The mess is not a sign to stop. It is simply what every real beginning looks like before the building rises.
Yes, it will be glorious. Yes, it will be impactful. Yes, in time it will be everything He has promised you it would be. But before any of that, first, it has to start. And the God who brooded over the darkness and spoke light is ready to move over your beginning too. So take the first step. Lay the first stone. Speak the first “let there be.” Hallelujah! Just start, and watch what your faithful God begins to build.
Pray The Word
Heavenly Father, thank You that You are the God who moves over chaos and speaks light into the darkness, and that You rejoice at the very beginning of a thing. I lay down the lie that my start has to be glamorous or perfect before I can begin. Thank You that You are with me in my messy beginning, brooding over it the way You brooded over creation. Give me the courage to simply start, trusting You to build it into everything You promised, in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
Speak The Word
I refuse to let a messy start talk me out of beginning. My God moves over chaos and speaks light into darkness, and He is with me in my beginning. I will not despise the small, unpolished start, because the Lord rejoices to see the work begin. I take the first step in faith, even in the middle of the dark. What God has promised will surely come, but first, I start, in the name of Jesus Christ!
