Love Without Losing Yourself

Study The Word

Proverbs 4:7 (KJV)
“Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.”

Let me be very clear from the start, so there is no misunderstanding: I am not talking about the salvation of souls. Leading people to Christ is our mandate as His followers, and we never back down from that calling. That is settled.

What I want to talk about is something more subtle: the wisdom to discern when your help is actually wanted, and when it simply isn’t. The wisdom to notice when someone has quietly started depending on you as their saviour, instead of Jesus.

Can I tell you where this gets so tender? There are people in our lives (and often it is those closest to us: family, loved ones, the inner circle) who will appear to want help. They will plead for rescue. But over time, their actions consistently tell a different story than their words. And because we love them, we overextend ourselves. We go beyond what is healthy. We pour and pour and pour. We pick up and carry what was never ours to carry in the first place.

Now let me be honest with you, because I know this road personally. I have known what it is to give myself away trying to fix and rescue and please, to the point of neglecting and even abandoning myself in the process. So I am not speaking to you from a distance. I am speaking as someone who had to learn that love, real love, is not reckless. True love is wise.

And that is why the Word puts such a high premium on wisdom. Look again at our verse: wisdom is the principal thing: the chief thing, the first thing to go after. The Greek word for wisdom is so rich:

σοφία sophía wisdom – skill, discernment, the practical, God-given intelligence of how to act in a real situation.

Sophía is not abstract or floaty. It is the practical, skillful intelligence of God at work in the middle of an actual situation, knowing when to move and when to be still. Sometimes the most loving thing you can do is step in. And sometimes, the most loving thing you can do is step back and let God do what only God can do. Wisdom is what tells the difference.

Because here is a truth we have to make peace with: you are not anyone’s saviour. There is no other name under heaven given among men whereby we must be saved. Jesus already filled that position, and He filled it perfectly. When you try to be someone’s salvation, you are reaching for a role that was never yours, and you will exhaust yourself reaching for it. You were never designed to carry what only Christ can carry.

So let God be God in people’s lives. I know how hard that is, especially when you love them and you can see exactly what they need. But your role is not to save them. Your role is to walk in sophía, to love people in truth (and truth sometimes means a loving boundary), and to trust the Holy Spirit to do the deep work that only He can do in a human heart. Some of the people you love most, you will have to love with open hands, releasing them into the care of a God who loves them even more than you do.

And listen, this is not a lesser love. It is a higher one. It is the love that refuses to lose itself, refuses to enable, and refuses to take the place of God in someone else’s life. You can love people deeply without trying to save everyone. In fact, you must.

So operate by wisdom, beloved. Pour out where God leads you to pour, and be still where He asks you to be still. Love generously, but love without losing yourself. Hallelujah, there is such freedom in finally laying down a job that was never yours to begin with.

Pray The Word

Heavenly Father, thank You that Jesus is the only Saviour, and that I was never meant to carry what only He can carry. Forgive me for the times I have poured myself out to rescue others to the point of losing myself, and teach me to walk in Your wisdom instead. Give me the sophía to know when to step in and when to be still, and the courage to love people in truth, with healthy boundaries. I release the ones I love into Your hands, trusting Your Holy Spirit to do what only He can do, in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Speak The Word

I walk in the wisdom of God, and I love people without losing myself. I am not anyone’s saviour; Jesus already filled that position perfectly, and I trust Him with the people I love. I know when to move and when to be still, because the practical wisdom of God is at work in me. I love in truth, I hold healthy boundaries, and I refuse to carry what was never mine to carry. I pour out where God leads and rest where He releases me, in the name of Jesus Christ!
