Study The Word
1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (KJV)
“What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.”
Let me ask you a question that matters more than almost any other: where do you get your sense of worth? Listen, whatever you build your value on, you build your whole life on. So this is not a small thing.
And if I am honest with you, so many of us have been building on shaky ground without even realising it. We drew our value from things we overheard about ourselves in childhood: the careless words, the labels, the comparisons. We drew it from painful experiences, letting what happened to us decide what we were worth. We drew it from fitting into the right social group, from rubbing shoulders with the who’s who, from our output and performance at work. And listen, some of those things are genuinely good. There is nothing wrong with meaningful work or rich friendships. But here is the quiet danger: none of them can ever tell you your true worth. They are far too fleeting for a job that important: here today, gone tomorrow. Build your identity on them and you will always feel the ground shifting under your feet.
Can I tell you something I have seen again and again, and known in my own heart? You can know that God loves you, and still not love yourself. You can depend on the acceptance and the validation and the love of other people just to feel some sense of value, and live with that low self-worth quietly running underneath everything you do. The Lord wants to heal that. He really does.
Because there is one source that will never leave you wanting. When you draw your value from God’s infallible Word, you finally stand on something that cannot be shaken. It is in His Word that you discover the most staggering truth about yourself: you were purchased. Not cheaply. You were bought with a price: His own precious blood.
Sit with the word Paul uses for that “price”:
τιμή timē price – a price paid, but also honour, value, and worth.
Do you see it? The very same word means both the price and the worth. So when Scripture says you were bought with a timē, it is telling you that the price He paid is the measure of your value. Can you imagine? Look at the cross, and you will see exactly what God thinks you are worth. He did not redeem you with silver or gold, or with the world’s shifting opinions. He redeemed you with the blood of His own Son. That is your worth, settled forever, and no person, no voice, no circumstance has the authority to revise it.
So the Word says, “therefore glorify God in your body,” because you are not your own; you have been bought, and you belong to Him. Your value is no longer up for public vote. It is divinely fixed.
This is why I want to gently challenge you: go for God’s value of you, above the world’s standard of value, every single time. But I know what you might be thinking: how do I actually start drawing my worth from the Word, when I have spent so long getting it from everywhere else? Let me share what helped me, because it is a real and learnable process.
It begins with reading. You have to open the Word and actually find out what God says about you: His description of you, His verdict over you. Then you have to do something that takes real courage: you have to believe it and accept it as true, even when your feelings are arguing. And then you keep meditating on it, turning it over in your heart again and again. Why the repetition? Because you have been relating to other sources for your value for a very long time, and that old voice does not go quiet overnight. The new truth has to be rehearsed until it becomes the louder voice within you.
That, beloved, is the invitation in Christ: to renew your mind with God’s description of you. Not the description you inherited. Not the one the disappointments handed you. His description. The one, and the only one, that gives you the highest possible value. Hallelujah.
Pray The Word
Heavenly Father, thank You that I am not my own; I was bought with a price, the precious blood of Your Son, and that is the true measure of my worth. I let go of every value I have drawn from people’s words, my circumstances, and my performance, and I choose to draw my worth from Your Word alone. Heal me where I have not known how to love myself, and teach me to read, believe, and meditate on Your description of me until it becomes the loudest voice in my heart. I will glorify You in my body and my spirit, which belong to You, in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
Speak The Word
I am not my own; I was bought with a precious price, and I belong to God. My worth is fixed by the blood of Jesus, not by the words, opinions, or circumstances around me. I refuse to build my value on shaky ground; I build it on the infallible Word of God. I renew my mind daily with His description of me, and it is the highest description there is. I am deeply loved and of great value to my Father, in the name of Jesus Christ!
